Unions angry at jail term Wodonga Border Mail, Australia
THE leaders of Victorias militant left unions last night condemned the nine-month jail sentence for former union boss Craig Johnston as a victory for anti-worker forces.
In a statement last night, 15 union leaders including Johnstons former colleagues at the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union expressed “total disgust” at the Victorian Court of Appeals tough sentence.
They said a campaign would immediately begin for Johnstons release.
The Court of Appeal yesterday jailed Johnston, former State secretary of the AMWU and leader of the ultra-militant Workers First faction, for nine months for his lead role in violent raids on two Melbourne firms in mid-2001.
