Boston sues contractors again over the Big Dig By Victoria Griffith, Financial Times, UK
In September, a large water leak in one of the tunnels frightened motorists and fuelled fears that driving through it is dangerous. The incident caused large-scale traffic snarls as sea water gushed on to the road. Engineers later discovered that the tunnels contained hundreds of leaks.
Independent consultants predict fixing this problem could take a decade or more, but the Bechtel/Parsons consortium says the problem can be patched up in just a few months, and for less than $500,000. Furious over the leak scandal, Mitt Romney, Massachusetts' governor, has called for the resignation of Matthew Amorello, the state's top highway authority.
The Big Dig has been hailed as both a political and engineering feat. Engineers had to freeze sea water around the tunnels to be able to dig through the mushy underground soil.
